Electric Classic Scooters
In this weeks episode we look at some classic Vespa Scooters that have been converted to electric by a company called Retrospective Scooters. They also convert Lambretta scooters too. As well as a tour around the scooters and the conversion we get to take them for a spin around the block.
The silver one is a 1959 large frame Vespa with a 48V system.
The blue one is a 70's small frame Vespa with a 72V system.
If you're interested in buying one of these finished scooters please contact us via sales@electricclassiccars.co.uk to discuss options.
If you're interested in getting your own classic Vespa or Lambretta scooter converted to electric or buying a conversion kit, contact Niall down at Retrospective Scooters.

OK. It's a given the Ferrari Testarossa is faster and better handling now it's been converted to electric, due to the better weight distribution, Tractive semi-active suspension and most importantly the 600hp Tesla performance motor out of a Tesla Model S p100D. But has it still got the ability to eat up the miles on a European road trip as it was originally intended as a GT car? That's what we...

    In the mid 90's drove the blue small frame Vespa to work daily. In India it was marketed by Piaggio as the Vespa PL 170. It had the split seats with the driver seat incorporating a spring mechanism for a comfortable ride. Very reliable plus was easy on the pocket. Smaller port hole under the driver seat mean't accessing the carburettor and spark plug a task.

    Classic Vespa's are worth serious money and I really do not see the point in devaluing them with an electric conversion. A really high mileage modern 10 -15-year-old Vespa would be a better choice. Also, because they already have all around brake discs and better comfier seat and suspension layout don't you think Richard?

    Hugely informative video, thank you. Niall, (Retrospective), is ahead of his time in offering electric conversions and kits. A bit of background on the original Vespa S/F, and L/F scooters. They, (with their 8" and 10" wheels), were only designed for town use. Once out of town, (original 2 stroke models up to 200cc), you will not have the power to keep up with traffic, particularly on dual carriageways. I guess the electric converted models are the same. The small frame scooter was designed for teenagers, who, (back in the '60s, were lightly built). Fast forward to the 2020s, and I think most people sitting on the small frame would find it too small for their body weight. The L/F scooter can carry a 75kg adult easily. You won't feel cramped. I just want to mention a point about safety. Many motorcyclists will tell you that having a loud exhaust means that other road users and pedestrians are aware of your presence. From your video, the electric conversions are almost silent. Will you get pedestrians steeping off the pavement in front of you? A point to consider.

  • @tykwondoka

    The range is OK if you drive 50 miles per day and are able to get enough charge overnight. The problem with batteries is when they get old they appear to be be full making it difficult to judge range. Then when you use it like you always do they will all of a sudden loose power when you should still have some left. Most people will not have a place to charge overnight. They will be forced to use a rapid charging station. Rapid charging diminishes range over time quicker than trickle charging. Electric cars need a generator that can charge the battery and run the vehicle at the same time. This way you don't have to wait to charge on long trips and can still charge overnight for average daily commutes.

    What a totally useless statistic. There is no country in the world where there are as many car fires as in Sweden. Not because of technology, but because there are individuals who light up on purpose and most of them in residential parking lots where there are mostly fissile cars, electric cars are expensive and most of them are on residential lots where there is a greater risk of being caught. Nothing about why they burn. He has no idea what he is talking about (I have my own experience). Not a sound about the deadly toxic gases that form when electric cars burn.

    In Australia, the rules with regards to Electric Conversion of vehicles are similar to the rules in the UK. I am not sure if the UK follows a British or European Standard, but in Australia, any Electric Vehicle Conversion must follow NCOP 14. I am also not certain with regards to the Technical Inspection / Approval Process in the UK, and who pays for that to reach completion? In Australia, it isn't cheap, and this Technical Approval Process must be funded by the owner of the newly-converted EV. Also in Australia, following EV Conversion, you are issued with new Registration Plates, and the new Registration Plates must also bear a small blue triangle with the letters "EV" within this triangle. The sole reason for the blue EV triangle, is for the identification of the vehicle, for first responders, such as a Road Accident or vehicle fire. For anyone contemplating an EV Conversion of any Classic Car, my advice is to do some groundwork. The first thing, would be to make contact with your Vehicle Insurer, and explain to them your intentions. This was the first thing that I did, before completing an EV Conversion on my '71 Super Beetle, back in 2019. Hope that this helps.

    There are a long list of associated risks. The high temps of the fires cause other BEVs and objects to catch fire quickly. You are sitting on the firewall - if a battery catches fire you are not protected, a petrol vehicle fire wont burn through the firewall. Many BEVs being electric; use electric door latches; when the battery starts to catch fire the door latches and electric windows don't work trapping people inside. In West Hollywood, a driver showing off a Tesla Y's acceleration, lost control and hit palm trees, the car caught fire. 3 passengers in the back were trapped, passers by attempted to break windows extracting 2, the 3rd burnt to death.

    • @ElectricClassicCars
      @ElectricClassicCars 3 дні тому

      Look at the Luton car park fire and Liverpool arena car park fires. Both started by diesel vehicles and spread quickly because the burning fuel pooled and ran like rivers of fires under neighbouring cars. You don’t get rivers of burning fuel with EVs. All cars, ICE or EV have to have mechanical interior door handles as well as electric by law. Teslas are in the arm rest. 😉👍

    • @litestuffllc7249
      @litestuffllc7249 2 дні тому

      @@ElectricClassicCars To have a Petrol fire there has to be a Defect a leak; a petrol fire is preventable. Not so with your EVs they can catch fire just sitting doing nothing brand new.The Luton fire was a Diesel hybrid; if you look at the video it says hybrid on it; the fire is shooting out the side like a torch; characteristic of Lithium Ion. I see no sea of diesel flowing anywhere; and diesel doesn't even catch fire normally so your logic doesn't hold. The only times you see a Diesel fire is when the engine runs away and the operator doesn't know there is a shut off for the fuel. I'll check on the Liverpool one; never heard of it. Your video suggests EV fires are FUD which they aren't they are a considerable risk.

  • @litestuffllc7249
    @litestuffllc7249 3 дні тому

    Falcity Ace shows this clearly as there is video of the Porsche BEV starting on fire while doing nothing; Porche is being sued for all damages. I had not been charged often, it was being charged, it was new. This is not the only case. 4 BYD dealerships burnt to the ground in China; what is in dealerships? New EV cars. Also several transporters carrying cars from the factory have caught fire from more than one brand; new cars never driving more than a couple miles.

  • @litestuffllc7249
    @litestuffllc7249 3 дні тому

    You don't properly represent the risk. BEVs can self ignite. Look at the Falicty Ace carferry fire - Started by a brand new Porshe BEV sitting doing nothing but being trainsported.; brand new, perfect as can be determined; it caught fire; then started a fire quickly with 400 other BEVs causing the ship to sink with 4000 luxury cars in 10,000 ft of water off the Azores. Unlike petrol; Electric batteries do not have to be damaged to catch fire. Dendrites are deposits inside cells which can grow and at random cause a short inside a cell, that spreads to other cells catching the entire pack on fire. The tempratures of the fires are 10x has high as petrol.

    • @ElectricClassicCars
      @ElectricClassicCars 3 дні тому

      ICE cars self ignite. Look at the BMW recall because of cars catching fire when parked. Look at how many ICE cars are presently having recalls because of fire risks via no recalls for EVs presently. 🤷‍♂️😉👍

      I've done a conversion, but no where near as nice. It's so quiet, but when I try to film it all you hear is wind nose and rattles. But when I ride it you hear nothing at all. I think the quiet makes the sounds that were already there more noticable. Same thing on the mower I did. After the conversion you can hear the little rattles that were always there. The motor noise just drowned them out. Guess you could always put a music system on to generate some noise.

I could buy myself a rough original SX200 for that lol I cover many miles on mine even did the IOW a couple of years back..343 miles in total, so unless I had a mobile power station following me it would be a nightmare, plus rallying would be out of the question as many sites don’t provide power points. Someone needs to come up with a synthetic fuel for scooters..that would be more acceptable to the masses…
